Mason Bee Condos!

March 24, 2015 by purplehazelavender

The other day I was finally able to place my mason bee condos outside for the first time. This is the first year I haven’t made my own mason bee homes and instead bought a commercially produced one from a local store.

Mason Bee Condos

In the past I’ve simply drilled holes in a block of wood and hung it on the south facing side of our house. This year though, we found some really neat bee homes that will be easy to clean and reusable from year to year.
With the decline of regular honey bees over the past several years, I began looking for alternative pollinators for our fruit trees here at Purple Haze. Typically, our trees blossom long before the honey bees are active so our pollination rate was very low. Mason bees, however, emerge from their cocoons in early spring and literally “throw” themselves into pollinating all available flowers and blossoms. While a honeybee will methodically place pollen on it’s legs for transport, the mason bee simply dives in, coating it’s entire underside with a healthy coating of pollen…this is why they are such prolific pollinators as they go from blossom to blossom, leaving a bit and taking a bit.

While having these little bees around early is nice, they are also a gentle, solitary creature. It’s almost impossible to goad them into stinging and it’s a cool pastime to see them laying their eggs in your provided housing. These newly laid eggs will then provide one with future generations of mason bees in the years to come. The term “mason” is derived from the fact that after laying and egg and depositing some pollen for food, the female bee will then seal off the “birth” chamber with a wall of mud. She will then go out, gather more pollen, lay another egg with  pollen food included, and seal it off with more mud. This will go on for around 4-5 weeks when sadly, the bee will die. She will, hopefully, have left future generations of bees sealed up until the next spring when the entire process starts over again.

Mason bees are fun for the whole family. They’re harmless, hard working, can be observed up closely and will provide you with a bountiful fruit harvest year after year. For more information on raising mason bees try visiting www.crownbees.com …and have fun!

What to do while visiting Purple Haze……Destinations #7 & #8

Two Forks

7. Shhhhhhh!!! Don’t tell anyone about this one! Just up from Sequim
in the foothills is a magical place. We call it “two forks” but I
think it’s proper name is Dungeness Forks campground. It’s where the
Dungeness river and the Greywolf river come together. It’s a U.S.
Forest Service campground that is opened seasonally for camping but
during the winter is still available to stroll through as a day use
facility. The roar of these two fascinating rivers is so great most of
the time, one can’t hear himself think but who cares? We rummage
around up there frequently scrounging for the abundant edible
mushrooms that inhabit the area. Maps and directions to this area are
available just east of Sequim at the U.S. Forest Service Headquarters
in the little logging town of Quilcene. Now you have to promise to
keep this one under your hat.

8. Oysters anyone?

dungeness crab

Dungeness Crab

I like oysters..and crab…and clams. That’s one of the main reason I planted myself here. Shellfish I am.

Just about anytime of the year, one of these delicacies are available
here in the Sequim area. Just a short hop from Purple Haze Farm is
some of the best clam and oyster beds on the planet. Sequim and
Dungeness Bay are famous for these delicious shellfish.
Did someone say “Dungeness Crab” ?? A short stone’s throw from Sequim
is Dungeness Bay, home of these tasty critters and available almost
year round. You can wade for them, or put out pots or rings. Be sure
and consult the rules and regulations in regards to the harvest of all
shellfish species.  You might even want to take in The Crab Festival that happens every year in October-the dates this year are Oct. 9-11, 2015!  The Purple Haze Farmhouse would be the perfect cozy place to stay while taking in the Festival!

Cabela’s visits Purple Haze Lavender Farm!

November 4, 2011 by purplehazelavender

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Cabela’s at the farm for a photo shoot! It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and it “almost” felt like Spring! (the cups of coffee and hot chocolate helped!)

A big thank you to the Oak Table for making that large “to-go” order in record time and to Wind Rose Cellars for the wine (to be drank much later in the day…)

Each and every member of the crew were really great to work with and we would be happy to have them and their families back anytime!

Thanks everyone-it was a pleasure!  We’ll be sure and put the link up to the catalog when it comes out!

Watch for us on Good Morning America’s Weekend Window segment this Sunday-Oct. 3!

October 1, 2010 by purplehazelavender

Earlier this summer Good Morning America visited Purple Haze Lavender and interviewed our owner Mike Reichner and took some great footage of the farm!  The segment is scheduled to air this coming weekend on GMA’s Sunday Morning program in their Weekend Window segment.  They also stopped by Olympic Lavender and Jardin du Soleil while here in Sequim, as well as visiting some of the local points of interest  in and around the Olympic Peninsula.   So grab a cup of coffee and check out our “little piece of heaven” this Sunday Morning!
