Check out this nice article that Explore Washington State recently wrote about us! Our owner Mike will be doing a podcast with them soon-so stay tuned for that!

The other day I was finally able to place my mason bee condos outside for the first time. This is the first year I haven’t made my own mason bee homes and instead bought a commercially produced one from a local store.
While having these little bees around early is nice, they are also a gentle, solitary creature. It’s almost impossible to goad them into stinging and it’s a cool pastime to see them laying their eggs in your provided housing. These newly laid eggs will then provide one with future generations of mason bees in the years to come. The term “mason” is derived from the fact that after laying and egg and depositing some pollen for food, the female bee will then seal off the “birth” chamber with a wall of mud. She will then go out, gather more pollen, lay another egg with pollen food included, and seal it off with more mud. This will go on for around 4-5 weeks when sadly, the bee will die. She will, hopefully, have left future generations of bees sealed up until the next spring when the entire process starts over again.
We thought it would be fun to share with you some of our favorite places and things to do while visiting us at Purple Haze in Sequim. A personal recommendation is always best and having served for over 20 years as a Washington State Park Ranger, our owner, Mike Reichner, lives and breathes for the outdoors. So we decided he was the perfect person for the task at hand! Over the next few weeks Mike will be sharing with you some of his “must see” locations! This way whether you are just visiting the farm for the day or coming to stay with us at the Purple Haze Farmhouse you will have some fun ideas and places to visit as you discover our beautiful Olympic Peninsula.
Mike’s 1st pick-Olympic National Park.
The park is huge so don’t plan on seeing/experiencing it all in one
day. The Olympic National Park Visitor Center is just down the road in
Port Angeles and is a great place to start. They have some video
programs, lots of exhibits and a “Discovery Room” for kids. They hours
are seasonal so be sure and call first. (360) 565 3130. 3002 Angeles
Road, Port Angeles.
The Visitor Center is a great stopping off spot if you are exploring
Hurricane Ridge as it’s right on the way up, up, up to a fabulous
alpine setting at the top. Skiing, hiking and snowshoeing are offered
or you can just sip a steaming cup of hot chocolate and take in the
splendor from the lobby of the lodge. This is just flat out one of the
most beautiful views in the world. I’ll never forget cross country
skiing with my kids up there out Obstruction Point. Ranger guided
snowshoe walks are also available. 360 565 3130 . www.nps.gov/olym
If you’re the type that isn’t into “nosebleed” heights maybe Sol Duc
Hot Springs is more to your liking. To get there simply follow Highway
101 west of Port Angeles, past gorgeous Lake Crescent for around 20
miles and look for the turnoff. The drive to the Hot Springs is an
event in itself as you enter the famous rainforest. There are multiple
hikes to choose from once you get to this destination but for you
slackers you can always just hang out in one of the several mineral
baths available. Always call ahead. 360 327 3583

He will be sharing the “Purple Haze” story on how we began, trials along the way, and how we have successfully continued to farm the wonderful herb lavender for over 17 years in Sequim, WA. This is shaping up to be a great conference for those who have a love for lavender and want to grow it! There is still time to register and spend a weekend learning about all things lavender!
Recently we were lucky enough to be blessed with a wonderful visit from “foodie” blogger, Elena Fernandez.
Mike had a great time sharing our farm with her and it was a most delightful visit. We thought you might enjoy reading her blog post about her visit to the Purple Haze Lavender Farm!

We have received a lot of questions about buses this year to tour the farms and the answer is: that due to rising costs Purple Haze WILL be the only farm that will be serviced by a bus. Pick up location will be the same as always at Lavender In the Park-should run about every 15-20 minutes!
Don’t forget there is always a chair waiting for you-see you at the farm!

Our next door neighbors, David and Jennifer, have opened a new downtown tasting room just a couple of doors down from our downtown store. It features their wonderful Italian style wines from Wind Rose Cellars. A really nice atmosphere, great appetizers, and a superb line of wines. Rosalind and my favorite is their Dolcetto and the Hunter Red….wait, hold on here; they are ALL fabulous!
We have a wonderful new little “greeter”! Her name is Penny! Our owners Mike and Roz have fallen in love with her and she is just a “little bit” spoiled-many of you may remember our first farm dog “Gordy”-he loved each and every visitor to our farm (especially those that shared their ice cream!) Rare Earth has their audiences up and out of their seats dancing and singing along with their million selling classics such as “Get Ready”, “Hey Big Brother”, “Losing You”, “Born to Wander”, and “I Just Want to Celebrate” creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the Madison Square Garden Concert in 1970, the Atlantic Pop Festival in 1971 or the California Jam which was one of their most memorable concerts broadcast nationally in 1974. This concert is being offered in conjuction with the Sequim Balloon Festival which takes place Sept. 1, 2, & 3 in field right next door to our farm! We are super excited to be a sponsor of this event-so get your tickets now and come and CELEBRATE with us!
